Build a Bouquet with Delphinium (Larkspur)

We at Bridal Bouquet Builder actually have 5 flowers tied for 4th place on our flower suggestions ranking, which of course is compiled from your suggestions through our app.

Delphinium/larkspur is one of those tied for fourth, so it's probably about time that we chat about this gorgeous addition to a bouquet.

What is delphinium?

According to The Farmer's Almanac (2018), delphinium (also known as larkspur) is a tall plant that is popular in a variety of garden settings, such as cottage-style and cut gardens. It's a more fragile breed than those flowers we've talked about before in past posts, but a beautiful one nonetheless. Be warned, though, as young delphinium plants and delphinium seeds can be poisonous to humans.

What do you need to know about delphinium in a bouquet?

Growing season

Delphiniums are a spring flower that need moist, cool summers with not to much wind in order to grow. Some varieties seed easier than others and delphinium can be tricky to grow in the wrong conditions.

Color variety

Delphinium can come in a variety of colors, including the following:

  • Blue

  • Pink

  • White

  • Purple

Bloom size

Delphinium have very small blooms on long, "spikey" stems. They're very good for accenting a bouquet, but not for filling large amounts of space.
